KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak, who is serving his 12-year jail sentence over the SRC International case, can attend the Dewan Rakyat proceedings with the prisons department’s permission, says Speaker Azhar Harun (pic).
Azhar told the Dewan Rakyat he did not have the authority to decide whether or not Najib (BN-Pekan) could come to Parliament to attend its proceedings.
ADVERTISEMENT “That is not under my jurisdiction because he is not in my custody. The prisons department has him in their custody, so it’s up to the prisons department to release him from their custody,” he said.
“Based on my understanding, if the prisons department (temporarily) releases him from custody, they will set the conditions for that. Again, that doesn’t fall under my authority.”
He said that, in general, every MP was entitled to come to Parliament and attend its proceedings.
He was responding to Hanipa Maidin (PH-Sepang) who had asked if Najib could be brought to the Dewan Rakyat in handcuffs for the MPs to see.

Last month, Azhar confirmed that Najib remains as Pekan MP since he has filed a petition seeking a royal pardon for his conviction in the SRC case.
