Kota Kinabalu: Golf Academy Borneo in collaboration with the State Government have completed their search for 20 junior golfers to be trained under their ‘Sabah Maju Jaya’ programme at the Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club.

More than 1,000 children from 17 schools across the State have been introduced to the sport since the phase one search began and it ended on Thursday at Tambunan Golf Club with the participation of 61 school children and orphanages from the district.

British PGA Professional and former Malaysian Ladies coach Neil Douglas, who guided the programme with fellow professional Ricardo Petersen from South Africa, said those selected will be trained weekly at their academy.

“We hope this new initiative can give a chance to children who would not have had the chance to try golf before,” he said.

He added that the next phase will be held in different locations. “We are hoping to teach over 5,000 children in a long term plan which will act as a feeder to our high-performance programme and the future will be bright for golf in Sabah.”

Apart from Neil and Ricardo, the academy also boasts the service of another British PGA professional  Chris Boyle.
