SANDAKAN: A local fisherman who was stranded at sea due to a sinking boat was rescued by “KD Todak” belonging to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) which was carrying out an assignment around Marudu Bay waters on Jan 4.Sandakan Sea Region 2 Commander Rear Admiral Sazalee Shoib said the matter was noticed by ship watchers on the platform who saw a glimpse of the victim floating in a position around four nautical miles east of Kudat town waving towards the ship for help.

“KD Todak members acted immediately to save the victim. The victim, identified as Radmay Asmadul Bakar, said he was on his way home around 4pm after dropping off his 15-year-old daughter at the dormitory at SMK Telaga, Pitas.
“However, the boat he was on suffered a leak due to the impact of strong waves.
“When he was found, the victim was trying to save himself by swimming to the nearby land at a distance of four nautical miles, for about an hour, until he was found by KD Todak,” he said in a statement, Friday.
The victim who was in a weak state was rescued and given first aid, food and appropriate clothing by the ship’s crew.

“The victim’s boat that almost sank was also towed to a safe area. The victim was taken to Kudat Port and the incident was referred to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) DM 16 Kudat for further action,” he said.
