326 take part in traditional archery championship

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 326 traditional archers with 214 men and 112 women took part in the State level league championship held at the Likas Archery Field here from January 21-22.

The best male archer was awarded to Noraswandy Sapar from Kemtihah Club from Sipitang while Nurul Azieza Bhalqeist Ahmad from Kota Kinabalu Kesatria Traditional Archery Club (Kesatria) won the female title.

Organising chairman Suhaimi Sapiee, who is also president of Kesatria, said the two-day competition was staged to select athletes to represent the State in the national competition scheduled in May.

“We are looking for 20 male and 15 female archers for the national competition in May and the  State  tournament was based on the  national league format to test the archer’s accuracy and speed as well as their mental and physical endurance.

“The male category was contested over a distance of 60 metres, 50 metres, 40 metres and 30 metres while  50 metres, 40 metres, 30 metres and 20 metres for the females,” he said.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) corporate communications centre director Dr Jakaria Dasan who officiated the tournament said with team work and proper development programmes, traditional archery has the potential to become one of most popular sports in the country.
