Tawau records high number of locked vehicles: Police

LAHAD DATU: The public are to be more alert and understand the condition of their respective vehicles in order to avoid locked vehicle cases, especially those involving children.Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue station Chief Sumsoa Rashid said locked vehicle cases recorded a high number since the beginning of 2023. He said the numbers are worrying as most of the cases involved children trapped inside the locked vehicle.

“In the past 30 days, five cases of locked vehicle have been recorded with four of the cases involving children being trapped.
“The latest cases occurred on Monday (January 23). Our department received a distress call at 10.27am from a parking lot of a shopping mall in town areas.
“Upon arrival, we discover that a boy was trapped alone inside a Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD) and immediately attempted to open the door using special tools.
“We manage to open the door after ten minutes and rescued the boy before handing him over to his family who also witnessed the operation,” he said.

Sumsoa said this incident should raise the awareness of the public on such case.
The vehicle’s owner should understand how their vehicles work especially the vehicle lock system so that such cases can be avoided.
