2,159 dengue cases, six deaths in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Sandakan recorded 2,159 cases of dengue fever with six deaths last year making it the district with the most dengue deaths in Sabah.Sandakan Health Officer Dr Johari Awang Besar said until January 28 this year, a total of 267 dengue cases were recorded with one death.ADVERTISEMENT
Currently, Taman Mawar Sendang, out of three known hotspots, was identified to be the highest recorded area in Sandakan with 143 cases within an epidemic period of 98 days.
The two other hotspots are Kampung Berhala Darat Zone B with 17 cases and in Taman Tai Fui Yen with 12 cases.
He said there are seven areas with an uncontrolled epidemic status namely Taman Indah Jaya Phase 9, Bandar Ramai-Ramai, Kampung Mangkalinau, Taman Megah, Taman Rimba, Taman Indah Jaya Phase 6 and 7 and Sri Taman.
“Therefore, the cooperation of all communities is needed to deal with dengue fever,” he said when contacted on Saturday.ADVERTISEMENT
Dr Johari said it can be done by behavioural changes, understanding the gravity of the situation and taking appropriate preventive measures.
“This is by ensuring that the residential area or every area in the district is always clean, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and using aerosol to eliminate adult aedes mosquitoes among other necessary measures,” he said.
