RM27 million allocated for sports development

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has allocated a total sum of RM27.02 million for the development of sports in the State.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this in his speech read by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin at the Winning Incentives Presentation Ceremony to the Sabah Para Sukma squad held at the  Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Thursday.

The figures include the expenditure to conduct joint sports science studies with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and other agencies.

In addition RM21.6 million was also allocated for upgrading and maintenance of sports complexes including youth arenas throughout the State to ensure all sports facilities and hostel are in good condition.

Hajiji said the State Government is always committed to the development of sports and hopes the allocation will  encourage  more sports activities as well as helping the athletes to train more efficiently with modern technology.

“Through the State Sports Policy, the government is creating a sports culture and providing equal opportunities for all levels of society to improve their health as well as helping the athletes to achieve  sports excellence on the world stage,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Para Sukma squad received a windfall of RM526,100 as cash incentives for their historic win at the Malaysia Para Games last year.

RM405,700 of the total amount went to the athletes and RM98,400 to the coaches while the team managers received RM12,000.

Sabah clinched the overall title in the biennial games by dethroning defending champions Sarawak with their total haul of 54 golds, 36 silvers and 35 bronzes.

The track and field team who delivered 30 golds, 18 silvers and 17 bronzes was the biggest recipient with RM262,200 followed by the aquatic team with RM128,900 and the table tennis team with RM64,100.

The other recipients were archery (RM23,100), ten-pin bowling (RM11,900), lawn bowl (RM10,700), badminton (RM8,700), powerlifting (RM3,500) and chess (RM3,000).

Hajiji was proud of the squad’s achievement and hopes the incentives will motivate the athletes to strive for more success in the future.
