The offence, under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old woman was ordered to enter her defence on a charge of abusing a child who was under her care.

Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim made the order for Sabarria Sazali, after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Sabarria on Thursday.

The court set April 3 this year for Sabarria’s defence at 2pm.

Sabarria is accused of committing the offence by causing physical and emotional injury against the six-year and five-months-old girl between March 2019 and Feb 27, 2020 at a house in Kg Kota, Tuaran.

The charge stated that Sabarria was a person responsible to take care of the child. The offence, under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution had called seven witnesses during the prosecution.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus conducted the prosecution while Sabarria was represented by counsel Adelia Adnan.

In the same court, a man pleaded guilty to taking syabu repeatedly.

However, Suhaimi Hasan’s sentencing is on Feb 13 this year.

He allegedly took the drug in Papar after testing positive. He has several priors. Pending the sentencing, Suhaimi was ordered remanded further.
