Department confirms Kundasang area potential disaster zone

RANAU: The Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG) Sabah confirmed that Kg Lembah Permai Kundasang is a potential disaster area arising from landslides.Its Director Dr Frederick Francis Tating said based on the integrated inspection in the area on Monday, the risk of disaster is real.
“JMG is preparing a report, as there is some more information to be looked at. It is likely to be ready by next week,” he said.

Ranau District Officer Jumain Abdul Ghani said,however, it has not yet reached the emergency stage of evacuation.
“We just ask the residents to move to a safe place, because this area is not safe,” he said.
Jumain who is also Disaster Operations Control Center (PKOB) Ranau Chairman said the unit is ready to provide Temporary Evacuation Shelter (PPS) for residents if something unexpected happens.

“We are always ready, based on information and advice from the PDRM and the Fire and Rescue Department.
“Right now we are waiting for a full report from the relevant authorities. JMG will issue a full report on the results of the field investigation for further action,” he said.

“I also suggest to immediately stop any construction of building structures in hillside areas and riverbanks,” he said.
Earlier, over 300 residents living in Kg Lembah Permai Kundasang were ordered to evacuate their houses with immediate effect, Monday, due to the high risk of a massive landslide here on Monday.
Head of Ranau Fire and Rescue Station, PPgB Ridwan Mohd Taib said the decision was made following an integrated inspection with several agencies under the PKOB.
“As a result of a follow-up visit to the informed area, we conclude that there is ground movement in Kg Lembah Permai.
“According to the Residents of Kg Lembah Permai, there is often a sound like an object being snapped or broken,” he said.
