TAWAU: The Land and Survey Department confiscated a heavy machinery used in illegal sand dredging activities at Kampung Barantian River in Kalabakan, here.Its Director Datuk SR. Bernard Liew Chau Min said the 8.20am raid on Thursday was carried out based on intelligence received from relevant government agencies.ADVERTISEMENT
“Our enforcement team confiscated an excavator and a pontoon. However, no arrests were made as the workers involved managed to flee.
“We have lodged a police report. An investigation paper will be opened as soon as enough information is gathered.
“Appropriate action will be taken according to Cap 68 of the Sabah Land Ordinance,” he said.
Bernard said the operators involved in digging and taking of sand in the river area did not obtain permission or a licence for such activity.ADVERTISEMENT
“The department's enforcement team will continue to monitor illegal soil, sand and stone extraction throughout Sabah.
“We will not hesitate to take action against any individual found to be breaking the law,” he added.
