TAWAU: A total of 1,706 cooperatives have registered under the Cooperatives Commission of Malaysia (SKM), Sabah branch, with some 218 of them registered in Tawau, as of December last year.Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said the number clearly showed the potential of the extensive business network in the Sabah cooperative ecosystem.ADVERTISEMENT
“This simply shows that it is the best platform to increase the socio-economy and income level of society,” he said in his speech at the “Turun Padang Ke Arah Kemasyarakatan Koperasi” (Maskop) programme, here.
Nizam also urged the cooperative movement in Sabah to focus on improving competitiveness and seizing the economic opportunities available, besides working together towards transforming Sabah.
“The investor-friendly Sabah Government has contributed positively and provided opportunities to cooperatives in the State, and as of September last year, Sabah has secured a total of RM11.9 billion in foreign investment and RM942 million in domestic investment within two years,” he said.
Through the investments, Sabah cooperatives, especially in Tawau, need to be wise in seizing the opportunities and resources available, to enable them to conduct profitable production or service activities.ADVERTISEMENT
Meanwhile, Cooperative Institute of Malaysia (IKMa) Director-General Datuk Mohd Ali Mansor, when met at the same event, said the programme was held annually to gauge responses from cooperatives for a better impact of the programme and 30 locations have been targeted for the programme implementation this year.
