Man killed, another injured in Lahad Datu crash

LAHAD DATU: A 51-year-old man died after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a Four-Wheel- Drive (4WD) at Km 71, Jalan Lahad Datu-Tungku on Friday.The victim was heading towards Tungku from Lahad Datu before the 12.15pm incident.ADVERTISEMENT
District Police Chief, ACP Rohan Shah Ahmad, said the incident was believed to have occurred when the victim lost control of his Proton Persona and entered the opposite lane before crashing into a 4WD.
“The Persona driver died on the spot due to impact while his 42-year-old passenger suffered injuries. The 4WD’s driver escaped unhurt.
“Police investigation found that the incident was caused by the Proton Persona’s driver who lost control of his wheel and entered the opposite lane,” he said.
According to Rohan, both drivers were not under the infleuce of alcohol or drugs, however, blood samples were taken for test.ADVERTISEMENT
“Investigation is still ongoing under Section 41 of Road Transport Act 1987.”

Meanwhile, State Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the department received a distress call following the incident at 12.25pm via MERS999.
A team of Fire and Rescue personnel from Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the team found that the accident involved two vehicles and one of the victims was trapped inside the Proton Persona.
The team managed to free the victim, but was pronounced dead by the medical team at the scene and handed over to the police for further action. The injured victim was taken to hospital by the public.
