GPS, BN vow support for Unity Government

Kuala Lumpur: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) assured that it will defend the current Unity Government which it is part of, as the present administration is important for the country’s political stability.

Unity Government Secretariat Chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the matter is an important assertion and essence of the speech by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

In a Facebook post, Asyraf said Abang Johari had highlighted the matter during the second Unity Government Secretariat meeting at Umno’s headquarters in Menara Dato’ Onn, here, Sunday night.

GPS, he said, also saw that stability would bring great economic benefits to the people.

He said Abang Johari, who is also GPS Chairman, had also stressed the importance of strengthening Sarawak.

“If Sarawak is strong, the federation itself will be strong.

“GPS also congratulates Umno, which is getting stronger after the party election, which is also an important factor in the Government’s stability,” he said in a post on Facebook, Monday.

He also uploaded a picture with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Abang Johari, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir.

The second Unity Government secretariat meeting was chaired by Anwar.

Also present were the president and secretariat members representing the five coalitions under the Unity Government, namely Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, GPS, Gagasan Rakyat Sabah and Warisan.

These coalitions consist of 20 political parties.

Seat negotiations among parties within the Unity Government are proceeding well ahead of the state elections expected later this year, said Anwar.

The Tambun MP, however, said the matter is still being discussed within the joint committee consisting of leaders from all government parties.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi assured that the new Umno leadership together with Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue to support and strengthen the Unity Government.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno President, said based on the results of the 2023 Umno Election which ended on Sunday, it was evident that every level of the national leadership and the grassroots were clearly in support of Unity Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“This manifestation is very clear because even though we know that there are efforts to disrupt the current government, it was rejected by the Umno delegates,” he said after the meeting.

Apart from support from Umno and other BN component parties, Ahmad Zahid expressed confidence that every party, including from Sabah and Sarawak under the Unity Government, will continue to support the Government.

“Therefore, the combination of 20 parties in the Unity Government will be strengthened by the new leadership of Umno and Insya-Allah (God Willing) the Unity Government will become stronger,” he said.
