Kota Kinabalu: The development of electronic sports (E-Sports) in Malaysia is progressive with potentials in commercial value.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin said the development of electronic sports in the country should not be underestimated considering it had high commercial value and was capable of generating the economy of young people in the country.

“Based on statistics released by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Malaysia in 2020, the number of E-Sports fans in the country increased from 9.5 million people in 2016 to 19.8 million people in 2019.

“This shows that this electronic sport is growing and gaining ground along with the advancement of current technology,” he said while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Champions Programme: Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports Meta E-Sport Cup 2023 here, on Sunday.

He added that the sport was a pride to Sabah as an E-Sport Mobile Legend: Bang-Bang player Mohammad Irwandy Lim would represent Malaysia at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia this year.

“Indeed, this sport can be a medium for the growth of the country’s economic development if it is done in a good and planned way,” he explained.

A total of 848 people participated in the competition  organised for the first time jointly by the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry, Community Hero, Centre Point Sabah and Telekom Malaysia Berhad where the prizes were presented by Ellron.

At the programme, Rasid’s Hyper Grock team were crowned as the champions of the Mobile Legend: Bang-Bang game category while the PUBG Mobile game was won by Super Elite team. The Tekken 7 game on the other hand, was won by Yong Tze Kiong and Muhd Fikfri Razali was crowned as the champion of the Fifa 2023 game competition.

Also present were Sabah KBS Permanent Secretary Datuk Mansur Asun, Sabah KBS Deputy Permanent Secretary Putra Jali and Head of TM Sabah Customer Division Sahrimin Mohd Iman.
