Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is exploring peaceful co-existence with mischievous macaques whose numbers have grown alongside cases of stolen food and damaged property.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has upgraded the status of long-tailed macaques known locally as “kera” and the pig-tailed variation as “beruk” to Endangered in March last year.

Sabah Wildlife Department Director Augustine Tuuga said the second most common human-wildlife conflict in the State involved macaques.
