Tip of Borneo to reopen early April

KUDAT: The Tip of Borneo (Tanjung Simpang Mengayau) will reopen to the public in the first week of April after the first phase of upgrading work by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) is ready.State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew said this, Wednesday, after a site inspection and briefing by Arkitek Summaz Senior Project Architect Neil Marsoh.

She said the improved facilities include a new covered walkway, a toilet for the disabled and a viewing platform complete with electric poles.
“Safety of tourists and visitors is of utmost importance. Railings must be installed at the viewing platform.
“Areas which are out of bounds for now must be cordoned off until such time when public access is allowed,” Liew said, while emphasising maintenance of environmental cleanliness and marine waste management.
She also clarified that Phase One of the upgrading works had never stopped completely as claimed by certain quarters since its implementation on Dec. 5, 2021.

“Work had slowed down due to bad weather and delay in the delivery of building materials to the construction site,” she said. As for Phase Two of the upgrading works, Liew said it was concurrent and would pick up momentum from next month to be completed over a duration of six to 10 months.
Phase Two involves demolition of the existing structure and construction of a new Visitor's Centre which is the main building (to house the lobby, office and souvenir shop).

Liew was accompanied on the working visit by the Ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary I Mary Malangking, STB Product Manager Effendi Mahany and Assistant Product Manager Jason Paujik.
