Murder of maid: Couple’s trial set for January 15-19
The accused’s respective counsel informed the court that they would send a representation letter to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s (DPP) office for the case.
Kota Kinabalu: The High Court here set Jan 15-19 next year for the trial of a contractor and his former reality TV cooking show finalist wife, who were charged with murdering their maid in Penampang, two years ago.

High Court Judge Datuk Christopher Chin Soo Yin fixed the date for Mohammad Ambree Yunos @ Unos and Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong during further case management on Monday.

The accused’s respective counsel informed the court that they would send a representation letter to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s (DPP) office for the case.

The couple were jointly accused of murdering one Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, between Dec 1 and 13, 2021, at A-03-A unit, Block A, at a unit in Amber Tower, Lido Avenue Condominium, Lorong Dalapan, Penampang.

On Nov 17, 2022, Ambree, 40, and Etiqah, 33, claimed trial to the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with 34 of the same Code.

The charge carries the death sentence, on conviction.

The court vacated the early trial dates set on May 22 – 26 to give time for the representation.

The court also ordered the couple’s bail to be extended.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Afiq Agoes prosecuted.

Ambree was represented by counsel Kimberly Ye while Etiqah was defended by counsel Datuk Seri Rakhbir Singh.

Meanwhile, eight people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Asri Abdullah, Johari Riki,  Ian Lester and Abd Razak Husin pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing 3.35gm, 0.09gm, 0.06gm and 0.03gm respectively at Sembulan Lama, Inanam, Donggongon in Penampang and in Petagas between Oct 6, 2022 and Jan 9 this year.

Asri, a foreigner was sentenced to one year and seven months in jail and to take effect from his arrest and ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

Johari, Ian and Razak were jailed nine months each.

They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail or both on conviction.

The other four, Gibson Junior, Mark Richard, Hairul Azri and Wendy Jukidi admitted to taking syabu and amphetamine at separate locations here.

Gibson, Mark and Hairul were fined RM2,300 or seven months’ jail each while Wendy was handed five months’ jail.

Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction.
