According to the facts of the case, on October 11, 2022, Officers Authorised under the Food Act 1983 took samples of the Cherries Plum products of the Bao Dao brand sold at a mini supermarket here.
The sample was sent to the Sandakan Food Safety and Quality Laboratory for analysis.
The results found that the sample contained cyclamate, which is a sweetener without substances that is not allowed as stated in the Seventeenth Schedule of the Food Regulations 1985.
The investigation paper was then opened by Assistant Environmental Health Officer, Khalid Syed Alie and Exervien Stephen.
This case was handled by the Prosecuting Officer from the Beluran Area Health Office, Shim Jik Kwang.
When in court, Shim argued that cyclamate is a chemical that’s not allowed to be added into food and sold in the country.
The presence of cyclamate could cause cancer in the long term due to its carcinogenic properties.
The prosecution also requested that a suitable punishment be imposed on the accused in the interests of the public and buyers.
The company representative, who is also Chief Operating Officer of the company, paid the fine.
