July verdict for ‘refusal to teach English’ case
The suit was filed by Rusiah Sabdarin, Nur Natasha Allisya Hamali and Calvina Angayung, who are now 22 years old.
Kota Kinabalu: The ruling of the civil suit filed by three former students of a secondary school against a teacher, a principal of the school at that time, Education Minister and two others for refusing to teach the English Language subject to the students six years ago, will be on July 18 this year.

High Court Judge Leonard David Shim set the date during the clarification of submissions and also fixed by May 12 for parties to file and exchange submissions in reply if any.

The suit was filed by Rusiah Sabdarin, Nur Natasha Allisya Hamali and Calvina Angayung, who are now 22 years old.

They were former students of SMK Taun Gusi, Kota Belud.

They filed the suit against the teacher Mohd Jainal Jamrin as the first defendant,  Hj Suid Hj Hanapi (in his capacity as principal of the SMK Taun Gusi) as second defendant,  Director General of Education Malaysia as the third defendant, Minister of Education Malaysia as the fourth defendant and Government of Malaysia as the fifth defendant.

They had claimed, among others, that Mohd Jainal failed to turn up in class to teach the subject for seven months in 2017, while the other defendants took no reasonable action despite being notified of the matter.

The plaintiffs had called 10 witnesses and only three witnesses testified for defendants during the hearing.

Counsel Sherzali Herza Asli acted for the former students while Senior Federal Counsel Mohd Hafizi Abd Halim, together with Federal Counsel Fazrul Fardiansyah Abdul Kadir, acted for the defendants.
