Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) captured two crocodiles in waters near the Likas jogging track where sightings have become more common.

However, it is learnt that the first catch on April 14 had died in a net trap.

It was a 33kg male measuring six feet six inches.

SWD Director Augustine Tuuga said crocodiles are finally beginning to take the chicken bait, which is usually gotten to first by monitor lizards.

The second catch last Sunday (April 30) was the first caught with a metal trap near the golf driving range.

“SWD staff during routine monitoring saw the ensnared five-foot female and relocated it to the Rescue Centre in Potuki, Putatan.

We use the same trap all over the

State which has managed to trap crocodiles up to 16 feet,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Likas Stadium spokesperson urged recreationists to exercise caution by not going close to the edges of waters.

“Evacuate the area immediately upon sighting a crocodile. Security monitoring will continue together with the SWD which possess the expertise on the matter, to ensure customer safety,” he said.

Three crocodiles were spotted lurking the waters earlier in April. However, their total numbers are unknown.
