Tun Hussien Onn college: 43 students in Kewasa programme
KUNAK: A total of 43 Tun Hussien Onn college students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) are participating in the “Kembara Anak Watan” (Kewasa) programme here, from May 12 to 17. 

UKM Student Affairs Director cum Tun Hussien Onn College Director Professor Ts Dr Norinsan Kamil Othman said volunteers will carry out community activities in selected locations here.

“On the first day of the volunteering programme, we focused on SK Pangi with various activities carried out by UKM students.

“These include a project to build concrete/stone chairs, paint the floor of the volleyball and sepak takraw court, painting murals and a gotong-royong beach clean-up nearby the school.

“(There is also) a motivational programme with the Primary Six students of SK Pangi, Kunak,” he told the Daily Express when met here, last Saturday. 

Also present was SK Pangi Headmaster Saidin Banaha.

Dr Norinsan said the programme was among efforts to educate and contribute to the local community.

“We expect these (students) to be agents of change and unity,” he said.

In addition to SK Pangi, the volunteering programme will focus on SMK Madai, Pusat Pembangunan Minda Insan (PPMI) Kg Kabog, Mini Estat Sejahtera (Mesej) Kg. Pangi, Ma’ahad Tahfiz Ashabul Yamin Pangi, Kg Getah and SMUI Tahfiz Kunak.

He said various activities would be carried out at these locations, including the distribution of aid. 

Among them are village carnivals, Hari Raya festivals, educational activities, cultural performances and installation of solar lights, among others. 

He said there are 53 donation boxes as part of the Kewasa programme, which is being carried out with the Youth and Sports Ministry and several non-governmental organisations.
