Telibong plant ready June; Papar dam study
On Papar dam, Shahelmey said the Ministry is still waiting for the feasibility study to be completed.
THE Telibong 2 water treatment plant is expected to be completed by next month, said Deputy Chief Minister III cum Works Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya.

He said the Water Department is still in the midst of discussions and coordination with the Public Works Department (PWD) on the pipe-laying works.

“I hope this will be resolved soonest so that the pipe-laying works can be completed and water supply can be commissioned from the newly-completed plant,” he said after officiating the Sabah Construction and Machinery Expo (SCME) 2023 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu on May 5.

It was reported that the Telibong 2 water treatment plant was supposed to begin operations last year.

The plant was a short-to-medium resolution to the water shortage issue here.

It was also reported that the plant would increase the existing water supply by 20 per cent and ease the water shortage problem in the northern part of the city.

On Papar dam, Shahelmey said the Ministry is still waiting for the feasibility study to be completed.

“It was supposed to be completed by next month, but I was told there was an extension of time requested.

“Hopefully, the Ministry would be able to get the result by the end of the year so that we can advise the State Cabinet on the construction of the dam.”

Meanwhile, Shahelmey hoped local construction industry players would benefit from the three-day SCME 2023, not only by gaining information but also learning more about the industry’s technological changes.

“I encourage local contractors to keep abreast of current technological changes as these will help improve their efficiency and expedite the construction period,” he said.

Earlier, in his speech, he said to boost the economic recovery and instil confidence in foreign investors to increase Direct Foreign Investment (DFI) in Malaysia, the Government would be launching more new construction projects for the development and benefits of the country.

“The building industry is in the midst of a major revolution. In this globalisation and digital age, the Government is accelerating the adoption of Construction Industrial 4.0. “I am very pleased that the Sabah Builders Association is moving in tandem with the government policy by organising the SCME,” he said.
