Kota Kinabalu: Ben Leong and Nicholas Fung will be spearheading the local challenge in the  inaugural RM182,000 Hilux Cup Golf Tournament starting at the Sabah Golf & Country Club (SGCC) this morning (Tuesday).

The two seasoned home grown golfers who are making their debut in the third leg of the Toyota Tour are set to face in-form youngsters Ervin Chang, Shahriffuddin Ariffin, Paul San and Galven Green.

Both missed the opening leg Tun Ahmad Sarji (TAS) Trophy in March and the second leg Mirai Cup in Kuching a fortnight ago due to prior commitments in the Asian Tour and the International series.

They are considered early favourites due to their intimate knowledge of the layout and the greens of SGCC where they started their career.

However, Ervin will be hoping to win back-to-back titles after his massive six-stroke triumph over Shahriffuddin in Kuching last week.

The 24-year-old from Kajang has been on a hot streak since his joint-second placing in Saujana for the TAS Trophy followed by another second placing finish at the

Mena Tour Malaysian Swing at Desaru’s Valley Course before his win in Kuching.

Shahriffuddin on the other hand, had won the Selangor Masters last November that gained him playing rights in the 2023 Asian Tour.

Meanwhile, there will be two marquee groups for rounds one and two.

The third and final day pairings will be based on the leaderboard after 36 holes.

The marquee groups will comprise Ben, Ervin, Shahriffuddin, Paul, Nicholas and Galven.

They will tee off from the 10th hole in the middle bracket today and on Wednesday they will be in the last two flights from the 1st tee.
