Sabahans win three of five Malaysian golds

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Muay Thai exponents excelled at the recent IFMA Senior World Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand.
They contributed three of the five gold medals and also one of the two silvers won by the national team.

Two of the gold medals came in the Under-23 wai kru discipline with Daris Muzzamiel Mahadi taking the men’s title after defeating his Hong Kong opponent Tsun Wah Koo 9.40-9.10 in the final, and Yan Jia Chi in the women’s category by beating April Jpy Madrid from the Philippines 9.57-9.20.
The third gold medal was won by Daris and Asyraf Danial in the Under-23 men’s duo maimuay discipline with the 9.30-9.17 victory over their Philippines opponents LJ Rafael Yasay and Adelle Vinscent Rosales.
The only silver medal was delivered by Myra Arina Roslan and Derora Dane Daniel after they suffered a heartbreaking 9.10 -9.20 narrow loss to Richein Yosorez and Alyssa Kylie Mallari from the Philippines.
Sabah State Muaythai Association president Nazri Ab Razak who had earlier set only a three-medal target from the athletes was overjoyed with the final results.

“It was a fantastic result from the athletes. I am really satisfied and happy with their achievement.
“Our initial target was only to win three medals but with the hard work and efforts from the coaches and athletes themselves, we were able to exceed our expectation to bring back three world championship titles in addition to one silver,” he said.

Meanwhile, the team was led by State maimuay coach Mardiana Mohd Maulana and State muaythai head coach Cyrille Dhillon Tahing.
The 10-day tournament which also marked IFMA’s 30th anniversary had attracted some 2,000 delegates from 200 countries.
