Sabasco in the bag, BornOil shifts to Sarawak’s Bario rice
“BornOil recognises the cultural value embedded within Bario rice, representing not just a staple food but also an embodiment of the rich heritage and deep connection between indigenous communities and their ancestral lands,” said Ambrose.
Kota Kinabalu: Following the success of its Sabasco sauces from chilli cultivated in the volcanic soils of Kunak, Borneo Oil Berhad (BornOil) is embarking on its next venture popularising another Borneo crop –Sarawak’s Bario rice.

Like Kunak on Sabah’s east coast, it aims at supporting local businesses and generating employment opportunities in Sarawak’s remote highlands that grow this unique rice.

“Grown by indigenous communities, Bario rice stands out with its distinct taste, aroma, and texture. It is cultivated using traditional methods passed down through generations,” said BornOil Executive Director Datuk Joseph Ambrose Lee (pic) in a statement.

The pristine air, high-altitude and fertile soil of the Bario region further contribute to the rice’s quality.

“BornOil recognises the cultural value embedded within Bario rice, representing not just a staple food but also an embodiment of the rich heritage and deep connection between indigenous communities and their ancestral lands,” said Ambrose.

By collaborating with Sugarbun Borneo Asian Food group, BornOil helped revitalise the chili industry and championing Kunak’s micro-farmers and their traditional cultivation practices.

“BornOil’s commitment to community empowerment extends beyond financial assistance, playing a vital role in uplifting entrepreneurs and rejuvenating struggling economies in even the most isolated corners of Borneo,” he said.

“These indigenous communities have diligently preserved the traditional cultivation of Bario rice for generations, and BornOil aims to provide comprehensive support that goes beyond securing successful harvests,” said Ambrose.

His vision for a brighter future is the driving force behind BornOil’s initiatives.

“At BornOil, we firmly believe that our success is inseparable from the well-being of the communities in the East Malaysian states we operate in. This unwavering commitment drives us to give back and create a brighter future for everyone in Borneo.

“This commitment fuels BornOil’s focus on sustainable development, social progress, and environmental stewardship.”

Recognising the profound connection between East Malaysian communities and the natural landscapes of Sabah and Sarawak, BornOil prioritises the preservation of the land and resources that have sustained these communities for centuries.

“BornOil strives to create a future where the well-being of communities and the preservation of natural landscapes are at the heart of East Malaysia’s progress,” he said.
