Kota Kinabalu: Members of the public expressed surprise at being required to pay for parking at Tanjung Aru beach – the popular weekend gateway for relaxation, recreational activities or to watch the stunning sunset.

Many expressed displeasure over the imposition of parking fee to enter the second beach, which was also the main entrance to the rundown Prince Philip Park.

A regular visitor said people who regularly patronised the beach only paid for parking at first beach.

“But now going to second beach also one needs to pay, while third beach is closed to the public, which deprives the people from going to the beach to enjoy some tranquility and picnicking,” she said.

She questioned the justification for imposing the entry fee as there were no facilities such as shades provided for the vehicles.

“The parking area looked the same  as before and I do not see any additional structure erected to justify the payment.” The beach is a public place where everyone could freely go at anytime they wish, and why need to impose fee now, she asked. According to her, there were signboards being put up, including up to third beach saying that it was closed for maintenance.

She wondered if the closure had to do with the proposed Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED) being implemented soon as the signboards showed the instruction came from the management of TAED.

“While construction hasn’t started, it should continue to be opened to the public. Because this is the only place we can enjoy nature,” she said.
