Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here has dismissed Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali’s application for bail pending the disposal of her appeal in her case involving child abuse.

Justice Ahmad Bache said there were no exceptional circumstances that warranted granting her bail.

The judge noted that this was Siti Bainun’s second application for bail, after the sessions court rejected a prior attempt.

“If this application (for bail) is allowed, the accused will be out and then she will continue her charity work. There is a propensity that she may commit the crime again,” said Ahmad.

Having reviewed the notes of proceedings in the sessions court and its written judgment, the judge said he found Siti Bainun’s actions against the teenager, known as Bella, to be “cruel”.

Earlier this month, Siti Bainun was found guilty by the sessions court of neglecting and abusing Bella, who suffers from Down’s Syndrome.

The court sentenced her to a total of 12 years in prison. She filed an appeal the same day.

Siti Bainun was ordered to serve her jail term immediately after the court denied her bail application pending the appeal. She has been in Kajang prison since May 5.

Meanwhile, the High Court scheduled case management for the appeal on June 15.
