Chinese tourist drowns off Mantanani

KOTA BELUD: The holiday of a group of tourists from China ended in tragedy when one of them drowned while bathing at Pulau Mantanani, here, on Monday.
The incident happened at 1.10pm when the victim, identified as Shuwen Liang, 27, was swimming with his family in the waters near a resort on the island.

Resort security personnel noticed the victim was struggling and immediately rescued him onto a boat and brought him to the resort's jetty.
The victim was given initial emergency resuscitation at the resort before being taken to the jetty for further assistance.
Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station Chief Syazwan Latun said they received an emergency call at 1.13pm.
He said a team of rescuers rushed to the area some 27km away to conduct the rescue operation.

“After arriving at the Marine Ramp Jetty, CPR was performed on the victim.
“However, the victim was pronounced dead by medical officers at the scene.

“The victim was then handed over to the police for further action,” he said, adding the operation ended at 2.15pm.
