New floodlights by next year: Ellron
“At this time, the mentioned sports facilities are still being utilised by users and will be constantly monitored by my officials from time to time to ensure that the facilities are safe to use,” Ellron said.
Kota Kinabalu: The Penampang Sports Complex will have new stadium floodlights by next year, said State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin.

“The major improvement being done at the complex is the construction of floodlights at the main stadium of the Penampang Sports Complex.

“This project started in Feb 2023 and is expected to complete by Feb 2024,” he said during question time at the State Legislative Assembly sitting, here, Thursday.

He was responding to a question by Kepayan Assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang who asked on the status of the upgrading projects and construction of roofs at the Penampang Sports Complex’s outdoor court facilities.

“My Ministry has already listed for all outdoor facilities such as the sepak takraw, basketball, volleyball and futsal courts at the Penampang Sports Complex to be improved next year.

“This includes the proposal to build a roof for these outdoor courts.

“At this time, the mentioned sports facilities are still being utilised by users and will be constantly monitored by my officials from time to time to ensure that the facilities are safe to use,” he said.

The Sook Assemblyman hoped that complex users and sports enthusiasts could be patient about the matter. “This is for the good of the people in Penampang. The people in surrounding areas will also benefit from this,” he added.

To a supplementary question by Gum-Gum Assemblyman Arunarnsin Taib who asked if the Ministry had plans to build a sports complex in the Gum-Gum constituency, Ellron said the Ministry will conduct a study on it first.

“In principle, when we plan to build something such as a sports complex, we prioritise full districts. However we will consider this, we can conduct a study on the need for a sports complex in Gum-Gum,” Ellron said.

He said he will hold a meeting with Sabah State Sports Board officials and National Sports Council to discuss the study.

Earlier, Arunarnsin had reasoned that Gum-Gum had some 10,000 constituents including youths who have voiced the need for a sports facility in the area.
