Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission (EC) served 10 notices to electrical appliance shops in Karamunsing here, Friday, during a nationwide tour to enforce the Sirim-ST certified label.
EC Department of Enforcement and Area Operations Director, Md Zakuan Ibrahim, said a few stores were found to be selling electrical appliances without the certified label while some arbitrarily slapped energy rating labels on appliances.

“The public is always reminded to buy SIRIM-ST certified electrical appliances to ensure safety as the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) follows International Electro-technical Commission standards,” he said.
To date, the EC regulates 34 categories of domestic electrical equipment where nine electrical equipment require a Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) before a Certificate of Approval (COA) application is issued for manufacture or import.
The electrical appliances are air-conditioners, fans, refrigerators, televisions, lamps, washing machines, microwave ovens, rice cookers and freezers.
“Appliances with the Sirim-ST label with a five-star energy efficient rating ensures maximum savings in electricity consumption and can save on the consumer’s electricity bill,” he said, adding non-Sirim certified products are potential fire hazards.
