Kota Kinabalu: Some 100 members of Gabungan Orang Asal Sabah/Sarawak (the Sabah/Sarawak Indigenous Peoples Coalition) made heads turn when they went about in traditional attire in the city to promote Malaysia’s cultural diversity in the peninsula, recently.

The group which paid for their own fares visited shopping malls and boarded the MRT while there. “Among us there are Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Kadazan, Rungus, Dusun including Murut,” Peter said.

Video clips of their visit have been shared around, showing coalition members taking the MRT and walking along the airport terminal in their colourful traditional costumes. Some were walking barefooted. Many people were seen taking videos of them as they passed by.

Indigenous communities are the predominant ethnic groups in Sabah and Sarawak and are currently celebrating their respective annual harvest festivals.

In Sabah, the indigenous communities are celebrating the month-long Kaamatan festival. The highlight of the celebration would be on May 30 and 31 held at the KDCA. The Gawai Dayak in Sarawak will be celebrated on June 1 and 2.
