Transport ministry denies Labuan ‘left out’ of RM300 flight deal

PETALING JAYA: The transport ministry has denied a Perikatan Nasional MP’s claim that Labuan has been left out of the subsidised flight ticket deal for the upcoming Kaamatan and Gawai festivals.

The ministry maintained that flights to Labuan were included in Putrajaya’s initiative to subsidise airfares for flights to East Malaysia during the festive period.

“Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman’s claim that the transport ministry’s subsidy does not cover Labuan is therefore incorrect,” it said in a statement.

On Sunday, Suhaili asked why the island in Borneo had been left out of the subsidised flight ticket deal for the upcoming Kaamatan and Gawai festivals.

The government’s initiative will see the price of a one-way flight ticket to the East Malaysian states capped at RM300, excluding taxes and fees.

The government is expected to spend between RM5.8 million and RM11.4 million for this.

Kaamatan is being celebrated today while Gawai will be celebrated on June 1.
