Trafficking syabu: Filipino charged

Kota Kinabalu: A Filipino labourer was tentatively charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with drug trafficking.
Basri Madu, 40, was accused of trafficking 51.33gm of syabu at 7.40pm on May 21, this year by the roadside of Kg Ketiau, Putatan.

However, no plea was taken from Basri, who appeared before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun, after the charge was read out to him.
The charge, under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes.
The prosecution applied for a new mention date while waiting for the chemist’s report and objected bail to Basri as the charge has no provision for bail.
Jessica fixed July 3 for e-review and ordered Basri to be further remanded.

In another court, three people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.
Two of them, Arwan Awang and Julius Insiam, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to having syabu here.

Arwan was sentenced to 12 months in jail with effect from the date of his arrest on March 22, this year.
Julius was ordered to pay a fine of RM3,000 or 12 months in jail.
They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, a man, Fredoline Majit was fined RM2,700 or 12 months in jail after he admitted to taking syabu in Penampang.
Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.
