RANAU: The public, especially motorists, are advised to be extra careful when passing through a road here due to a sinkhole that emerged on Wednesday.
The section of the road in question is located along Jalan Telupid-Ranau, near Kg Lumou, about 78km from Ranau town.

Observation of the area shows a water source bursting through the ground area which eroded a huge portion of the road.
The situation caused a huge sinkhole to form, where half of the lane had collapsed, while the other half at any moment. At 3pm on Wednesday, motorists who went through the Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan main road were forced to share the single lane that was still passable.

Thus far, the single lane remaining is only safe for light cars and motorcycles, because heavy vehicles like lorries and trucks could accelerate the erosion.
Ranau Public Work Department (JKR) Chief, Alvonna Farhanah Jammy said that the area concerned (CH148.8, KM185.4) is located under the Telupid JKR jurisdiction.

There were barricades as well as strings installed around the area that had sunk by the authority in order to prevent vehicles from plunging into the hole.
It was not known if any alternative route was identified should the road collapse altogether, cutting off road communication between West Coast and East Coast via this route.

Passersby also voiced their concern about the situation, considering the fast approaching rainy weather throughout the state these past several days, which could spell a worse scenario for motorists.
In Beaufort, dozens of vehicles were stranded in Kg Bukau due to the road was flooded by overnight rain on Wednesday.
The cause of the flash flood was due to the river bursting its banks nearby. SK Bukau had to be closed and students were ordered to go home until the flood receded.
