Kota Kinabalu: CHIEF Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji expressed disappointment that there are teachers who abandon their responsibilities, as happened at SMK Taun Gusi in Kota Belud, where a teacher was found guilty by the court for being absent for seven months and refusing to teach English..

It resulted in a legal suit by three former SPM students who are now aged 22.

“A teacher’s responsibility is to teach. We hope this never repeats because educating our children is most important,” he said.

State Education Director Rais Saidin said they are monitoring the teacher identified as Mohd Jainal Jamran.

“Choosing to become a teacher means putting students first.

“Treat them like your own children who you would like to see be successful in the future. There are elements teachers should realise.

“However, it is an isolated case. There are over 40,000 teachers in Sabah and its one case.

“We must be positive because these are things to pay attention for quality improvement,” he said.

The court in its findings blamed the Government, Education Ministry, State Education Department and SMK Taun Gusi Principal of failing the students.

The students were awarded damages amounting to RM150,000 and spoke of receiving death threats by State Education Department officers besides encountering various obstacles during the six-year trial that was handled by the Sabah Law Association pro bono as a matter of public interest.
