Kota Kinabalu: The aspiration by some Muslim NGOs for a wholly Malay-Muslim government goes against the spirit of the 1963 Malaysia Agreement that made possible the creation of Malaysia.

Three Sabah NGOs representing native interests said should that  happen, Sabah and Sarawak should also have the option to opt out of the Federation and let the people of  Malaya decide what is best for themselves.

“As a matter of fact, a mutually agreed separation is a win-win solution for both Malaya and the Borneo territories as each sides get what it wants – Malaya a Malay-Muslim government and the Borneo a secular colour-blind government,” they said.

They said the “syiok sendiri” proposal of these NGOs to establish a government without the multicultural DAP probably won’t happen.

“There is no race, religion and political parties in Parliament, only lawmakers. Lawmakers are elected by all, and pledged on oath, must serve all.

The people should avoid political personality cults, political parties, party politics and membership in political parties under new forms of tribalism and feudalism under the guise of democracy,” said Borneo’s Plight in Malaysia Foundation (BoPiMaFo) President Daniel John Jambun, Global Human Right Federation of Malaysia (GHRF) Deputy President Peter John Jaban and Gindol Initiative for Civil Society Borneo Chairman Kanul Gindol in a joint statement, Thursday.

“Democracy isn’t about voting once in five years and going home and sleeping until the next election. Democracy only works if the people participate.

The people should form movements on issues and take to the streets after the social media if the gov’t closes the door to dialogue and/or the court denies hearing.

Islamic state will never happen in Malaysia. Islamic state may happen in parts of Malaya if there’s revolution as in Iran which is Shia. But Malaysia is Sunni,” they said.

Local government will help make difference for the better, they said, adding there will be better management of taxes, focus on local development, and sharing of the cake by companies with government and local community.
