Tuaran: There is need for the younger generation, who will one day lead the nation, to equip themselves with the willingness to learn, be creative and adaptable to surrounding situations, said Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

He said it was also important for the younger generation to be knowledgeable on matters related to patriotism – to understand how it works, why it matters and how they can use it to create positive change.

Dr Joachim, who is also the Local Government and Housing Minister, said this in his speech at the Merdeka for Mereka (M4M) charity event for the visually impaired here, last Saturday.

His speech was read by his Political Secretary Jonnybone J Kurum.

Dr Joachim said he was proud of the group of young Junior Chamber International (JCI) members who came together not only to raise funds, but also to raise awareness and promote kindness.

“Through this initiative, JCI reached out to hundreds of people and inspired many others to join their cause. Through these events, they have shown us that being blind is not a limitation, but a challenge that can be overcome with courage, determination and kindness.

“I am proud to see a group of young leaders who have brought awareness and kindness to the blind community.

“They have also reminded us that we all have a responsibility to care for each other and to create a more inclusive and compassionate society for everyone,” he said.

Dr Joachim also assured his support to JCI’s future endeavours.

Also present were Wallace Sheltered Centre, Sabah Society for the Blind President Datuk Rosalind Chew, JCI Tanjung Aru Immediate Past President Stephy Tham, 2023 JCI President Kevin Khor and M4M Organising Chairperson Lim Wuang Ching.
