Kota Kinabalu: Five suspected fish bombers were nabbed by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in two separate cases in waters near Mengalum Island, off here, on Wednesday.

Sabah and Labuan MMEA Director First Admiral Maritime Che Engku Suhaimi Che Engku Daik said two boats were detained at about 1pm by patrol boats.

Exploded guts: Their catch suspected via blast fishing.

He said the first case at 16 nautical miles northeast of Mengalum Island saw two sea gypsies without identification or licence, in addition to suspicious equipment.

“A couple of nautical miles further, another three were detained on similar charges.

“Both pump boats and all five crew members were brought to the Sabah Maritime jetty to be handed over to investigating officers.

“The cases are being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said in a statement.
