RANAU: Motorcycle users among school students need to have a valid licence to use the vehicle to school to avoid legal action.
Ranau District Police Chief, DSP Simiun Lomudin, said there had been several complaints received from school administrators stating that there are students riding motorcycles without valid licence.

“They can be prosecuted under Section 26 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and if convicted can be fined up to RM 2,000,” he said.
Simiun also explained that if school students are involved in an accident, they are not covered by insurance, otherwise the offence will face a compound under Section 15 of the Road Transport Act 1987 and motorcycles can be confiscated under Section 64 (1) of the same act.
He said that a student who is eligible to apply for a motorcycle licence must be 16 years or above for a class B2 and B licence as stipulated by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
Prior to that, the Traffic Enforcement Division of the Ranau District Police Headquarters carried out a surprise inspection by the main road near a school near here on Tuesday.

It was found that some students using motorcycles also had expired road tax.
However, at the discretion of the police, all offenders were only given a stern warning that they immediately obtain a valid driver’s licence before taking motorcycles to school.

In the meantime, Simiun also advised motorcyclists against modifying the silencer or exhaust pipe of their motorcycles to avoid disturbing the public peace.
“Our side will not compromise and will take strict action against any motorcycle owner who modifies the exhaust to the point of making noise and causing discomfort to the community,” he said.
