Tawau athletes are MSSS Champs
The Tawau contingent which emerged as overall champions at the 55th MSSS tournament.
KENINGAU: Tawau emerged overall champions at the 55th Sabah School Sports Council (MSSS) Athletics Championship which ended at the Sports Complex, here, Friday.

Tawau collected 20 gold, 11 silvers and eight bronze medals while Keningau came in second with 12 gold, 10 silvers and 11 bronze medals. Third place went to Ranau who collected 11 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals.

The fourth to 10th place went to Kudat with eight gold, three silver and four bronze medals, Kota KInabalu (seven gold, six silver and four bronze medals), Tambunan (six gold, two silver and five bronze medals), Penampang (five gold, five silver and two bronze medals), Kota Marudu (three gold, seven silver, nine bronze medals), Lahad Datu (three gold, six silver and four bronze medals) and Sandakan (two gold, eight silver and three bronze medals).

A total of 24 contingents from all over Sabah participated in the five-day tournament from Sept 4-8.

Nurelfira Umara Mohd Yusuf from Tawau was named Sportswoman for 12-year-old girls. Nurelfira Umara got two gold medals and set a new record in the 80-meter hurdles event with a time of 12.41 seconds beating the record of 12.81 seconds by Naura Nurul Fatihah (Tawau, 2020) in addition  to breaking the MSSM record of 12.60 seconds by Alya Amyra Hanis Hamrin (Sabah, 2019). She also won gold in the 100-meter event with a time of 13.41 seconds.

Asrul Nurung from Tawau was chosen as the Sportsman for 12-year-old boys who won a gold medal and set a new record of 6.15 meters  in the long jump event, surpassing the record of 6.14 meters by Raining Tambako (Sandakan, 1974).

Abernetha Elissa Tadius from Tambunan was chosen as the Sportswoman for 15-year-old girls. She won two gold medalss and created two new records in the 100 meters and 200 meters hurdles.

In the 100 meters hurdles, Abernetha Elissa set a time of 14.49 seconds, surpassing the record 15.54 seconds by Nur Fatiha Najwa Mapiati (Tawau, 2020) and surpassing the MSSM record of 14.52 seconds by Nur Dinar Sofea Yuhaizam (Selangor 2019) and in the 200 meter hurdles Abernetha Elissa set record of 28.31 seconds beating the 29.26 seconds record by Halimatul Saadiah Mohammed (Southeast, 2017).

Ahmad Alhakim Abdul Rakib from Tawau was chosen as the Sportsman for 15-year-old boys who won a gold medal and set a new record in the 400 meter event with a time of 51.66 seconds beating the record of 52.68 seconds by Muhamad Azri Pirasa (Kudat, 2018).

Carefina Dian Eldy from Kudat was selected as the Sportswoman for 18-year-old girls who won two gold medals in the long jump event with 5.28 meters and the triple jump with 11.44 meters.

Mark Paladius from Tambunan was selected as the Sportsman for 18-year-old boys based on his performance of obtaining two gold medals and creating two new records in the long jump and triple jump event respectively.

In the long jump event, Paladius set a record of 7.19 meters surpassing the record of 6.96 meters by Gersom Bious (Interior 2012) and triple jump with a record of 15.04 meters surpassing the record of 14.99 meter by Alvin Roland (Ranau 2016).

During the competition, a total of 26 new records were created by the athletes in the three categories of boys and girls 12 years old, boys and girls 15 years old and boys and girls 18 years old in the field and track events at the qualifying stage, semi-finals and final events.

Political Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Jrenus Pagut who represented the Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ellron Angin officiated the closing ceremony of the championship and present the prizes to the winning contingents.

Also present at the ceremony were the Director of the Sabah Education Department, Raisin Saidin, District Education Officer who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Johari Jaibet Sabin, education officers, principals, headmasters and teachers from all over Sabah.
