Kota Kinabalu: The State Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry said a viral video on dead fish floating in unidentified waters that was linked to the release of toxic waste in Fukushima, Japan, did not happen in Sabah.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan said his Ministry through an investigation by the Sabah Fisheries Department confirmed that the incident of fish deaths to have occurred a few weeks ago on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, that is, fish reared in cages.

He said the cause of death is also understood to be the occurrence of algae blooming and had nothing to do with the release of toxic waste.
“The Ministry would like to advise the public not to worry about the situation of fish that may be contaminated by toxic poison because the Sabah Fisheries Department and several agencies and relevant institutions are closely monitoring the situation and have taken precautionary measures.
“The Ministry is asking the public, especially fishermen, to report immediately if they see a large number of fish dying suddenly in any waters in Sabah,” said Dr Jeffrey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister 1.
