JAKARTA: Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan targeted Indonesia to manufacture its own electric cars or electric vehicles (EV) by 2025 or 2026 during a workshop in Jakarta on Thursday.
Luhut mentioned that Indonesia is currently attracting EV manufacturers to develop in the state, one of which is Geely, one of China’s biggest electric vehicle manufacturers.

“We are currently discussing the technicalities and the president (Indonesia’s president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo) green-lighted [the joint research plan].”

The global market for EVs also surpassed its critical point of 5 to 10 percent, allowing speedy growth for the electric vehicles trade.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector also hit a critical point after EVs sold 10 percent of the total sales.
“This is the chance for Indonesia to own self-manufactured EVs. With this joint research, we could leapfrog,” he concluded.
