KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a cargo boat carrying more than 2,000 litres of petrol without a permit, near here, on Wednesday.

Kudat Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Maurice Grenville Abeyeratne, said the boat was intercepted and inspected at 8.30pm following intelligence information.

He said three individuals - a local skipper and two Filipino crew members – were arrested.

“One of the trio, aged between 19 and 33, was undocumented,” he said.

“Further inspection found approximately 2,000 litres of petrol stored in the boat’s storage tank,” he said in a statement.

Maurice said all suspects along with the boat and loot worth about RM232,000 were handed over to the investigating officers of the Kudat Maritime Zone for further action.

The case is being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1961 for carrying subsidised controlled goods with the intention of committing an offence and the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
