RM1.2 million to redesign Labuan food court questioned
The food court along Jalan Merdeka.
LABUAN: An activist here has questioned the rationale for Labuan Corporation to spend funds to re-design the food court along Jalan Merdeka which has been viewed as a failure.

Lau Seng Kiat was referring to the allocation of RM 1.2 million for upgrading works at “Anjung Selera Terminal” food court which is sandwiched between the ro-ro and passenger ferry terminals.

The food court built in 2007 at a reported cost of RM500,000 was formerly the site of a petrol station. The purpose of the new food court was to enable those jobless to venture into F&B business. Accordingly, the food court was named “Siswazah” (Graduates) corner.

“But it hardly attracted people and most of the time the facility was not fully operating.

It is therefore, baffling why the failed project was being revived with a new name “Terminal Corner” when there are already so many food stalls in town that are struggling to survive,” said Lau.

He added that LC already had a RM12 million food court at the Sea Sports complex operating since 2018 and even there not all the stalls have been taken up.

“This should serve as an indication that the food business is uncertain,” said Lau.

He also noted that in the outskirts one can also find many food stalls facing challenging times.

He said under the circumstances the amount used to upgrade the food used instead to build or repair public facilities and amenities.
