Machete attack on neighbour: Jobless man jailed 16 months

Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was sentenced to 16 months in jail on Tuesday for assaulting his neighbour with a machete.

Al Supri Abdul Manan, 29, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to voluntarily causing hurt to one Jenelti Tanjung, 54, with a 14-inch length of machete at 11am on March 8, this year at Telipok Settlement Scheme.

The charge, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or whipping or with any two of such punishments on conviction.

The prosecution informed the court that on the said day Jenelti was walking in the area when Supri suddenly threw a handful of dirt at him.

Jenelti reprimanded his actions and told him to go back to his house.

Shortly after that, Supri returned with a machete and swung the weapon at the complainant.

The complainant suffered a small wound on his left hand, the court heard.

The court ordered Supri to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on March 8.

In another case, a self-employed Filipino was sentenced to two years’ jail for attempting to steal a motorcycle.

Omar, 18, admitted before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to trying to steal a Yamaha LC machine belonging to one Razien Abdul Razak at 8.30pm on Sept 1 at the motorcycle parking lot at Taman Kuala Manggatal.

He was charged under Section 379A read with Section 511 of the Penal Code.

The court heard from the prosecution that Omar was caught by the owner, who saw him modifying the motorcycle starter wiring and pushing the machine away.

Omar, who has no identification document, was ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence.

Meanwhile, a couple was fined RM600 or two months’ jail for fighting in a public place.

Farid Chaun Chong, 30, and Suffi Fathanah Jepsi, 25, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at 4.45pm on Sept 12 at Shell Plaza, Jalan Abdul Rahman here.

The prosecution informed the court that the couple were fighting in the said area and scolded the security guard who wanted to break up their fight and asked them to leave the premises.

The duo refused and acted aggressively even cursing at the police and security guard.

They were charged under Section 160 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to six months or fine of up to RM1,000, or both, on conviction.

Represented by duty counsel Carmen Khoo and Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, the duo requested for leniency.
