TAMBUNAN: Ashton Alex from SK Sunsuron and Christine Ericka Christianus from SK Pegalan Kusob emerged champions in the boys and girls Under-12 categories at the Tambunan District Cross Country Championship held at SK Sintuong-Tuong, 56km from here recently.
The runner-up for the Under-12 boys category was Arvin Alex (SK Sunsuron) with Jendry Richard (SK Kaingaran) in third place followed by Dreyan Drake (SK Sunsuron) and Ryonex Andreas Jus (SK Bambangan) in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Meanwhile, Kellysia Turik (SK Nambayan) was the runner-up in the Under-12 female category followed by Deeyonie Saidi (SK Patau), Hellyssa Helmie Hendry (SK Sunsuron) and Maryneh Fread (SK Sunsuron).
A total of 242 students from 27 primary schools participated in the tournament and from that number, a 123 male participants and 119 female participants competed for a place to represent the district in the state-level Cross-Country Championship which will be held on Sept 23 at SMK Telupid.
Only five participants from each category, boys and girls under 12 years of age are eligible to represent the district.
The tournament which was officiated by the Deputy District Education Officer of the Student Development Sector, District Education Office Applonius Jaimi in his speech said that cross-country is one of the sports that are important in building the mental and physical fitness of students.

He said through challenging physical activities like this, individuals can strengthen their physical endurance, not only leading to better health, but also developing self-confidence and the ability to overcome challenges.
In addition, he said, this activity can promote values such as discipline, cooperation, and high competitive spirit, the students involved need to take care of training routines, follow rules, and communicate in their team.

“This helps them build self-discipline where this sport is not limited to physical aspects alone. It also plays an important role in giving birth to a competitive generation.

“Through competition in this sport, individuals learn to set goals, work hard, and not give up easily. All these are important traits to achieve success in life,” he said.
Applonius said, cross-country sports are not only physical activities, but also a powerful formation tool to build fit, disciplined, and high-spirited individuals, which in turn will produce a competitive generation.
