Over 40pc of old Tawau airport now squatter settlements: YB
Rina, who is also State Finance Ministry Political Secretary, hoped that Hardcore Poor Housing Project (PPRT) homes would be constructed since the Kukusan constituency has yet to have one.
TAWAU: More than 40 per cent of the 320 acre where the Old Tawau Airport was in Jalan Utara Baru here have been occupied by squatter settlements, said Kukusan Assemblywoman Rina Jainal.

As such, she hoped the Federal and State Governments would promptly develop the area as one of the measures to deal with the issue.

“We are really worried about this matter (slum settlements getting widespread) if there is no effort to immediately develop the Old Tawau Airport area,” she said.

She said the aerodrone site has been recognised as having potential and suitable to be established as a central economic development area that can catalyse Tawau’s forward progress while also eradicating the squatter problem.

“Without drastic and immediate measures, I am afraid that this squatter problem will become bigger to the point that there is no solution to it,” she said.

Rina, who is also State Finance Ministry Political Secretary, hoped that Hardcore Poor Housing Project (PPRT) homes would be constructed since the Kukusan constituency has yet to have one.

She reasoned that there would be no problem to build PPRT houses as there is enough space to do so in the area.

Rina said the Tawau Municipal Council had previously planned to develop the area and she hoped that the matter could be refined and implemented.
