Government urged to build alternative road in Beaufort

BEAUFORT: The Government should build an alternative road at Kg Batu 60, near the railway line, which has been drawn up by the Land and Survey Department, to overcome the flooding problem.

A resident, Edwin Louis, said it was time the Government implement the construction of the alternative route.

“The Land and Survey Department has provided reserve land to build an alternative road near the railway but the Government has not implemented it,” he said.

He said the floodwaters would be stagnant for at least four days before receding, preventing people from all walks of life, including office workers and students, to use it.

“The sad thing is students are unable to attend classes when it floods and have to stay home for at least four days until the water subsides,” he said.

For more than 50 years, Edwin said, this situation has continuously happened and the Government should not allow this to prolong.

“Every time there was a flood, all the residents would be affected for at least four days, with some vehicles getting stuck.

“Moreover, it also prevented visitors who were eager to visit and climb Akashi Hill located at Montenior because of the flooded road.

“The Government should resolve the problem by building an alternative road to enable the residents to use it instead of sitting at home to wait for the floodwaters to recede.”

In addition, Edwin said, Kg Jempangah was flooded which caused 53 houses to be submerged in water and three cars parked by the roadside to be under water due to the flooded road.
