Kota Kinabalu: The State Government allocated RM101 million for scholarships to students pursuing further studies in various fields this year, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

The amount marked an increase of 84 per cent compared to last year’s allocation of RM55 million.

“The State Government Excellence Scholarship award will benefit 4,638 SPM, STPM leavers and those in the higher learning institutions from Sabah,” he said after presenting the scholarship awards to 10 top student achievers who excelled in their STPM examination this year at Menara Kinabalu, Friday.

“Education is one of the thrusts in the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya development plan, which is human capital development.

“We need a human capital pool that is skilful and knowledgeable to develop Sabah,” he said.

Accompanied by State Public Service Department Director-General Datuk Zainuddin Aman and the Scholarship Awards Committee, Hajiji presented the scholarship offer letters to Arnie Jaliusih, Julizza Jummain, Kelly Ng, Mahazir Mahmod, Nur Hafizah Mansor, Nur Syafienaz Herman, Nurul Azwa Azura, Dayangku Siti Aisyah Pg Ali Mudin, Legendra Harroy and Shazliana Sahid.

Meanwhile, the Sabah Law Society (SLS) is assisting the country’s legal team in the fight against the arbitration award to the so-called Sulu Sultanate heirs.

Hajiji was informed about this by SLS President Roger Chin who led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him at Menara Kinabalu, Friday.

The SLS visit was to give the Chief Minister an update on its initiatives and to propose a partnership with the State Government on state law reform.

Chin also briefed Hajiji on the SLS Legal Aid services which members were providing voluntarily to the community in Sabah, besides saying that SLS supports the Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (BICAM).

Chin talked about the forthcoming Commonwealth Law Conference, which SLS plans to hold.

The SLS, Chin said has plans to visit several countries to offer legal services with the view to support the State Government in attracting foreign investors to Sabah.
