PAGALUNGAN: The traditional Tagal programme of freshwater fish will provide benefits in terms of increasing sources of income through fishing and tourism.

Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin said this programme also allows the beauty and cleanliness of the rivers to be preserved.

“At the same time it can increase the attraction of tourists to visit the place.

“It will automatically help boost the economy in the area involved,” he said, when officiating the traditional programme for three villages, namely Kg Saliku, Kg Kakutar and Kg Puputa in this sub-district.

However, he said it requires cooperation from the local community to ensure the Tagal programme bears fruit.

Ghani, who is also Chairman of the Sabah State Land Development Board (LKTNS), said the traditional freshwater fish programme is indeed a good initiative and it has become a habit of the community.

“I support such programme because they increase the local community’s income through fishing resources and effective river care,” he said.

Ghani also called on the villagers involved in this programme to be able to maintain and follow the procedures or rules outlined by the Fisheries Department so that the encouraging results through this initiative can be felt by the village community themselves.

He said the State Government would always try to give the best in increasing the income of rural residents or rural areas in the state.

“Therefore, as long as I am a representative of the people here and at the same time I lead the LKTNS, I along with relevant government departments and agencies also do my best to help diversify agriculture that gives returns and benefits to the settlers,” he said.

This kind of effort, he said, needs to be supported and utilised as best as possible for the sake of development and increasing the income of the people in the interior.

“I often voice the suggestions, views and expressions of the people, especially for the residents of this area to ensure development and improvement of the economy in our area continues to move along with the current development,” he said.

He called on the community of this area to always support the State Government’s development policies that can help and improve development in Sabah.

He also thanked the Department of Fisheries for making the traditional Tagal programme in three villages here a success.
